Episode Guide Series 5

 

Episode Three: "Thinking Too Hard"

Dr Ormerod and Frankie see to a drunken farmer who has had an accident in his tractor. Ormerod tries to hold it together, but Frankie witnesses a worrying moment of serious self doubt for Ormerod and wonders whether he is fit to be back to work so soon after the car crash.
    Dr Goodwin handles a case of domestic abuse when a mother-in-law presses for custody of her grandson, against the wishes of the mother.
    Impresario, a local nightclub, George, is admitted for suspected poisoning. Debbie his young wife may be the culprit.
    Several tests amount to nothing, George’s son Paul is quick to blame Debbie, saying that she’s been after his money for years.
     George is outraged by this claim and admits that he has been self-medicating and overdosing on vitamins in an attempt to keep his pecker up!
     A delighted Debbie invites the staff at St Aiden’s to the nightclub to celebrate. Later, the hospital revellers are intrigued to see a new side to Carnegie.
     And finally, Lizzie comes across and admirer, Teddy “TC” Catchpole, a stationary salesman. But Ken isn’t convinced that TC’s intentions are honorable.

Episode Five: "Fever"
The first scene we see Gordon and Jill pulling in to the parking bay at the front of ‘The Royal’.
  Gordon gets out of the car and walks on ahead, Jill follows him, and Stops him at the gate, there is a small piece of dialogue at the gate and Gordon storms of into reception followed by Jill.
   Jeff and Lizzie are at reception Lizzie gives Gordon his post he looks at it and then goes to do rounds, as does Jill.
  We next see Sister Brigid sat at the bedside of a young girl called Carrie Miller, Gordon sees her and then he and Sister Brigid have a talk about her condition.
  We then see a shot of Gordon popping pills.
  The next scene is of Jeff and Frankie running along the road to a man who has fallen off a bridge, Jeff has to climb over the bridge in order to reach him.
  Next we see Jill listening through a stethoscope thingy as she is treating a pregnant Lady called Dawn, who has come in with Fever, Vomiting and Just gone into Labour.
  Jill then goes of to find Gordon she sees him in a corridor and then comments on how tired he looks, she then follows him to Carrie Miller who has the same symptoms as Dawn. They then figure out it is Typhoid.
  When they tell Matron and Mr Carnegie Matron goes to find the source. Jill and Gordon leave and Jill Walks off leaving Gordon, he takes some more pills.
  When with Dawn, Jill decides they need to deliver the baby.
She comes out of the room and passes Matron. Jill asks her if the isolation ward is ready.
  Matron then tells Jill she knows that Jill is pregnant. They now have 4 confirmed cases as one of the nurses has gone down with it as well, Jill and Gordon are in Adams office when Matron comes in and says the source must be the hospital. Catherine knocks on the door and asks for Jill to come and see Dawn as she has deteriorated.
  Adam brings Lizzie and Ken to the side and tells them they need to clear the waiting room because there is a Typhoid epidemic. Lizzie then says “What Like in toothpaste!”
  She asks Sister Brigid to get Jeff or Gordon.
Matron and Adam are looking for the source when Alun comes in and tells them he hasn’t got any sandwiches then Matron calls Alun a genius.
  They go down to the store room and Adam finds an open can of Corned Beef. Alun tells them Ada got it form Ken. Sister Brigid looks everywhere for Gordon and finally finds him asleep in his office.
When he turns up late for theatre Jill has had enough and tells him off.
   Jeff has brought in the patient from the bridge, he has typhoid too. Mr Rose patches him up, and Jeff blames himself.
Mr Rose: I wasn’t aware the NHS was applied with mind reading.
Jeff: He came in a couple of weeks ago…he was…well….you know…
Mr Rose: Spit it out man
Jeff: He’s Impotent!
Mr Rose: Ahh one of life’s little ironies, an excess of led on the paper and lack of led in the pencil.
   Frankie and Alun bring in another patient and Frankie gives Jill the bottle to give to Gordon.
  Jill goes to Gordon’s office and reprimands him, but a heated argument turns into a big shock for Gordon as she tells him he better straighten up and fly right because he’s going to be a dad.
Jill runs out of his office crying, Gordon calls after but Matron asks him to do his last ward rounds.
  After that we see Jeff and Stella in overalls where they see Sister Brigid and she tells Jeff she can’t stay in the ward because it’s full of men!
  The final scene is Jill sitting in the garden, Gordon comes and sits opposite her, apologises and tells her he needs help and is going to get it, but most of all he just needs her.
Jill tells him she can help but that he has to trust her, he tells her he does and that he loves her very much.
Gordon gets up and walks over to Jill and kisses her, she begins crying and Gordon hugs her Jill then hugs Gordon.

Episode Six: "Letting Go"
Dr Goodwin returns to his car after paying a home visit to a patient, to find that it won’t start. He makes his way back to the hospital and asks Frankie to take a look at his car. Frankie agrees and goes on his motorbike to look at Jeff’s car. While he is busy fixing the car, Frankie notices that a man is stood watching him. The man walks over to Frankie’s motorbike and starts to ride away on it, so Frankie puts his leg out and knocks the man off the bike. The man goes over to Frankie and fights with him, pushing him to the ground and landing on the screwdriver Frankie had in his hand. The man gets up and rides off on the motorbike. Frankie finishes fixing the car and drives it back to the hospital where he notices blood on his shirt.
A short time later, the man is brought into the hospital after being involved in a RTA, so Mr Rose operates, finding a small puncture wound between the ribs and a split in the aorta. Whilst in theatre, the man dies. Frankie confesses to Sister Brigid that he thinks he killed someone and she persuades him to tell the police, so Frankie gives a statement. The police then talk to Mr Rose, who says that the man died from a split o his aorta and there was no possible link to the stabbing from the screwdriver. The police conclude that Frankie didn’t cause the mans death.
   Jill admits to Gordon that she’s starting to come round to the idea of being a mum.
   Ken acquires a record player, much to the excitement of Alun, who wants to buy it but realises he can’t afford it.
  Norman, a clown on the pier, goes to the hospital to see Jeff, complaining of an injured arm caused by falling off the tightrope. He is treated by Jeff and leaves.
A few days later, Norman returns with fellow clown Cyril, complaining that he keeps falling over. Jeff examines him and diagnoses a malfunction in Norman’s balance.
 Jean Westerley arrives by bus at the hospital, wearing her pyjamas. She has severe burns on her ankles and feet. She is taken through to A&E and treated by Catherine and Jill. When asked, Jean says she got the burns by knocking a pan off the stove. Catherine says she knows how chaotic it can be with children around, Jean says she hasn’t got any children. After treating Jean, Catherine and Jill leave her in A&E. Stella returns to find Jean has gone, so Lizzie tries to contact her, but finds that the address she gave doesn’t exist. Lizzie then contacts the bus company who say that a woman in pyjamas got on just past the reservoir. Jill goes to the house but there is no reply, although she saw a movement at the upstairs window.
Back at the hospital, Jill and Gordon find out from medical records that Jean has a son called Michael, so both doctors return to the house and this time, Jean lets them in. She finally admits to having a son and Gordon goes to see him, finding him in an upstairs room, cowering in the corner, twitching and making noises. Meanwhile, Jean informs Jill that it was Michael who knocked the pan off the stove and that he is so clumsy at times.
Jean is persuaded to go into hospital for treatment, taking Michael with her. Whilst in hospital, Jean tells Jill how she doesn’t let Michael out of the house due to his behaviour – coughing, jerking his head, flapping his hands and swearing. Michael and Gordon go for a walk in the hospital grounds, where Michael stops when he hears music playing. Jill suggests to Gordon that Michael may have Tourettes Syndrome. Jean and Michael return home, and Gordon gives him the record player to have in his room, as the music keeps him calm.
   In the final scene, Gordon and Jill are sat talking in the car. Gordon says that he loves them both, referring to Jill and the baby. She replies by saying “we love you.” They drive off…….
